The Doctor Gut range are classified as class IIa medical devices according to the European Medical device guidelines, as unlike medicines they do not have any pharmacological, immunological or metabolic action on the human body.

The natural mineral clay is not absorbed nor metabolised by the body but remains in the gut where it acts on the gastrointestinal mucus and adsorbs (binds) to toxins and other molecules before it is expelled from the body in the stools.

Disomectite (Magnesium aluminum silicate) is a naturally occurring mineral derived from refined from purified clay. It is crystalline, claylike material, available as an odourless, pale buff or cream fine powder. It is classified as an adsorbent material and because of its unique surface chemical groups and layered structure Diosmectite has a high binding capacity for a range of molecules.

Disomectite absorbs or captures toxins, bacteria, and rotavirus, preventing their adherence to the intestinal membranes where they can cause gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhoea, abdominal pain and bloating. Diosmectite can also interact with the gastrointestinal mucus layer thereby increasing its resistance to damaging agents.

Doctor Gut IBS relief and Doctor Gut Bloating relief also contain simethicone which helps gas bubbles in the stomach and intestines to come together more easily, which allows for easier passage of gas with less discomfort. Simethicone works on the surface tension of gas bubbles, causing smaller bubbles to merge into larger ones. These larger gas bubbles may be passed much more quickly, and with less discomfort, than a series of small gas bubbles.

Doctor Gut Diarrhoea relief sachets also contains prebiotic fibres which help the growth of the friendly bacteria bifidobacteria, helping to restore a healthy gut microbiome which in turn normalises intestinal transit times and relieves diarrhoea.

Doctor Gut IBS relief and Doctor Gut Bloating relief are in capsule form and can be taken with food or after a meal. The capsule should be swallowed whole with a large glass of water (200ml).

Doctor Gut Diarrhoea relief sachets contain a powder which is dissolved in water (150ml) or other edible liquid. To obtain a homogeneous solution, slowly pour the powder into the liquid and mix thoroughly before drinking. It is recommended to take between meals.

Doctor Gut Diarrhoea relief liquid sticks can be taken directly or diluted in a glass of water or other drinks (juice or yoghurt). Shake the liquid stick thoroughly before opening.

Diosmectite

Natural mineral clay or diosmectite has been used since ancient times as humans believed in its therapeutic benefits. There are many published studies showing it’s safety after long term oral consumption.

Diosmectite has been shown to be an effective treatment for diarrhoea since as early as 1961. In this study 97% of diarrhoea caused by different factors such as virus infection, food allergy, and food poisoning, was treated successfully by administration of diosmectite.

Since the 1960’s, there have been many studies in both adults and children with acute gastrointestinal infection to show that diosmectite can shorten the course of acute diarrhoea and reduce the occurrence of prolonged diarrhoea. In addition, studies have shown that it does not interfere with the electrolyte balance in the body, is well tolerated by patients and has minimal or no side effects.

Simethicone

Abdominal bloating is a common complaint in patients with functional gastrointestinal disorders such as IBS and has been attributed to intestinal gas accumulation.

In recent years, several studies have reported simethicone to be effective in the management of some functional digestive disorders. It is thought to relieve bloating and distension by altering the elasticity of the gas bubbles allowing larger gas bubbles to form which may be passed much more quickly, and with less discomfort.

Prebiotic fibres

Prebiotics are different types of fibres that are selectively used by gut microorganisms, thereby conferring a health benefit to the body. The prebiotics found in Doctor Gut diarrhoea relief increase the numbers of bifidobacteria in the human gut. This is thought to benefit our health through the replacement of so-called unfriendly bacteria and correcting the immune system (Wallace et al. 2011).

As research interest in prebiotics grows, analysis of an increasing number of types of fibres and the food they are found in are being undertaken, to try and establish the full extent of their ability to influence gut health.

Doctor Gut Diarrhoea relief sachets contain the prebiotic fibres: inulin, galacto-oligo saccharides, fructo-oligo saccharides, isomalto-oligo saccharides, polydextrose and lactulose.
Prebiotic fibres are dietary fibres that feed the friendly bacteria in your gut, helping to restore a healthy gut microbiome. These fibres also help the gut bacteria produce nutrients for the cells lining the part of your gut called the colon, which leads to a healthier digestive system.
